Unique wildlife experiences in Lieksa
Erä-Eero is located in Eastern part of Finland, in Kontiovaara, Lieksa. We are known worldwide especially for wolverines, which is our main attraction, but you can also get to see and photograph other wildlife in our observation and photography hides. We are open almost all year round, from March to November, so you can come and experience all four seasons with us.
Erä-Eero’s base camp is the Keljänpuro Lodge, which is an old lumberjack cottage from 1950’, renovated later by Eero himself. Getting here is easy by car, and you can enjoy the beautiful scenic route of road Kontiovaarantie with picturesque fen ponds on both sides of the road. Erä-Eero signs will guide you to the Lodge.
You can also get to the town of Lieksa by train or bus, from where we can arrange transportation for you to Keljänpuro Lodge if necessary. The nearest airport can be found in Joensuu.
You can book accommodation and order meals for the duration of your visit. In addition, we have some small items for rent, such as ball heads and sleeping bags. Ask about other available services.

The wolverine, a member of the weasel family (Mustelidae), is a challenging species to photograph and observe due to its rarity worldwide. In Finland, WWF has classified the wolverine as critically endangered. In addition to Northern and Eastern Finland, wolverines can be found in Sweden, Norway, Russia, and North America. At Erä-Eero’s hides, it is possible to photograph and observe wolverines during all four seasons.
The bear is Europe's largest predator and Finland's national animal. Bears are found all over the country, but the population is strongest in eastern Finland and Lapland. At Erä-Eero, the bear can be photographed and viewed between April and September.
The wolf is the largest of the wild canines. The most abundant wolf populations in Finland are near the eastern border, but in recent years the number of wolves has also increased in western Finland. There are wolves living in the forests close to Erä-Eero where they can be seen and photographed every now and then throughout the year.
Other species found in the area, in addition to wolverine and bear, are wolf, fox, beaver, goshawk and golden and white-tailed eagle. The best season for eagles is from September to April. The wolf and the fox move in the area all year round. Nature photographers have even been able to capture a lynx at Erä-Eero’s hides.
